John Ormerod - Head Coach and A Squad Coach

Hi - My name is John Ormerod and I am head coach to City of Wakefield S.C.

I have over 32 years experience of coaching swimmers at all levels up to international standard. I started with Huddersfield Borough (the forerunner to 'Borough of Kirklees') where my son Paul was a member. I moved to Brighouse in 1977 and was their head coach for 25 years. During that time I had numerous medallists at Yorkshire level and above, placing a swimmer on the British team at the European Junior Championships in 1983.

I am fully committed to improving the status of City of Wakefield SC in the swimming community, and to the advancement and well-being of the swimmers in the club. With the help and commitment of the swimmers and their parents I will do just that !!

We have a dedicated team of coaches and helpers throughout the club - myself in charge of A squad and Sarah Kinsey in charge of B squad with Steve Hawkshaw and Martin Nunns assisting Sarah. C squad is in the capable hands of Meg Kinsey, Nicola Brown and Sarah Curtis. All are ASA qualified.

All I can promise at this stage is hard work, and with regular attendance results will surely follow.

The Yorkshire Championships are our main focus each year - without some measure of success in these, swimmers cannot advance further up the ladder. We also compete throughout the year in the the Kirklees and District Championships, Airedale & Wharfedale Championships, the Barnsley Minors League and the Pocklington Times League; so catering for all levels.

Sarah Kinsey - B and C Squad Coach

Hi - I'm Sarah Kinsey. I first joined City of Wakefield Swimming Club (or Wakefield Amateur Swimming Club as it was then!) when I was 9 years old. I went on two exchanges with the club to Germany and Holland in the following couple of years. When I was 12, I decided that I wanted to put in more training, and as Wakefield could only offer 3 sessions at the time, I joined the Borough of Kirklees squad, though I retained dual membership all along, and have always competed for Wakefield in local galas.

During my time at Kirklees, I trained 8 times a week, including 3 mornings, plus 2 weights sessions. I competed at Yorkshire, North Eastern County and National level in the Butterfly and Distance Freestyle events, with my highest national ranking being 11th in the 800 free. At 17 I decided to pull back from such intense training and left Kirklees, coming back to train full time at Wakefield. At this time I also took my Level 1 teaching qualification, and started taking teaching groups at Wakefield.

When I went to University in Newcastle, I continued to swim, for Wakefield in galas when they needed me, for the University swimming team, where we competed in the Student National competitions, and I also joined the City of Newcastle club, so I could once again get the extra training I wanted.

When I finished University, I came back to Wakefield, and have continued to train and compete in local galas and Masters competitions ever since. The year after I came back, in 2002, I became B squad coach, and went on to complete my full Level 2 teachers’ qualification the following year. After all this time I still love swimming, both training and competing, and love coaching and being able to give something back to the sport I love so much.
